Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Temperament: Peaceful to Semi-Aggressive (chemical defence)
Growth Rate: Moderate (dependent on water conditions)
Placement: Lower to Middle
Lighting: Moderate to High
Flow: Moderate to Strong, Indirect
Ideal Parameters:
24-27°C
1.024 - 1.026 Salinity
8.1 - 8.4 PH
8 - 11 KH
400 - 450 Calcium
1250 - 1350 Magnesium
5 - 20 Nitrates
0.03 - 0.10 Phosphates
Additional Care:
Gorgonian Corals are beautiful, branching soft corals known for their delicate, tree-like structures and flowing polyps. They add natural movement and height to reef aquariums, making them an excellent choice for creating a diverse and visually appealing reef.
Photosynthetic Gorgonians benefit from moderate to high lighting and consistent, indirect water flow, which helps prevent detritus and algae from accumulating on their branches. Insufficient flow can lead to tissue irritation and deterioration.
These corals obtain much of their energy through photosynthesis, although occasional feeding with fine particulate coral foods or phytoplankton may be beneficial depending on the species.
Gorgonians should be positioned with adequate space from neighbouring corals to prevent stinging and physical damage. Avoid allowing algae to grow over exposed tissue, and ensure their branches receive good water circulation.
As always, stability is key.
