Chalice Corals are stunning Large Polyp Stony (LPS) corals prized for their vibrant colours, intricate patterns and unique growth formations. Available in a wide variety of colours and textures, these corals can develop encrusting, plating or scrolling growth patterns depending on the species. They thrive in stable reef aquariums with low to moderate lighting and gentle, indirect water movement.

Chalice Corals generally prefer lower lighting conditions, particularly when first introduced to an aquarium. Excessive lighting can cause bleaching or colour loss, so gradual acclimation is recommended. Gentle to moderate flow helps prevent detritus from accumulating on their surfaces without irritating their delicate tissue.

Many Chalice varieties possess powerful sweeper tentacles that extend primarily at night and can sting neighbouring corals. Adequate spacing is essential, particularly around more aggressive varieties. Although Chalice Corals obtain much of their energy through photosynthesis, occasional target feeding with small meaty foods or specialised coral foods may encourage improved growth and colouration.

Maintaining stable alkalinity, calcium and magnesium levels is important for healthy skeletal development. Avoid sudden changes in water chemistry or lighting, and ensure sufficient space is provided for their natural growth and expansion.
